Saturday, June 23, 2007 - In one of those "I whish I wasn't here today to race" SAMAX Motorsports drivers Patrick Carpentier and Kris Szekeres finished 12th in the EMCO Gears Classic 400-kilometer race held Saturday evening at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Kris Szekeres of Hartland, Michigan qualified the #11 SAMAX Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype in tenth place on Friday and was scheduled as the starting driver. Szekeres handed over the Dynamic Technology Pontiac Riley over to Carpentier still in 10th place after 37 laps, but the Canadian driver, who lives in Las Vegas, could not keep up with the leaders who eventually put a lap on the SAMAX car before the race was over after 111 laps.
Szekeres, who was making his second start with the SAMAX Team in 2007, was happy with the outcome even though he wished the team had not encountered problems with the cars throughout the weekend, especially during the race.
"It was good to get back in touch with the team, but we did have some set-up problems during the weekend," said Szekeres. "I thought that we qualified well, and that we could be up there with the front runners during the race, but it did not work that way. Now we have to look forward to Daytona where the track is not so technical to get back into contention. I enjoyed working with Pat (Carpentier) and I know that we will do better in Daytona."
The Gainsco team of Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty led from the pole to win their second back-to-back race and their third victory of the 2007 season ahead of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas. Third place went to Colin Braun and Max Papis. In the provisional driver point standings, Scott Pruett leads with 212 points, 11 ahead of Max Angelelli. Third place belongs to Memo Rojas, Pruett's teammate.
Round eight of the 2007 14-race Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series schedule will be held at Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona, Florida Thursday night July 5, 2007.
